Correcting myths from Dixy Lee Ray
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Dixy] Lee Ray somewhat confusingly sees environmentalists both as protectors of the status quo and as 'anti-development, anti-progress, anti-technology, anti-business, anti-established institutions, and above all, anti-capitalism' (i.e. 'anti' all things that define the status quo in the United States).
Robert Parson prepared a review of the two chapters on ozone depletion from Environmental Overkill "These chapters display serious misunderstandings of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics, they either ignore or misrepresent scientific evidence, and they are based upon poor scholarship, in particular the uncritical use of exceedingly unreliable sources."
And Michael Tobis wrote a review of the global warming material: "In the Global Warming chapter, there are quite a few factual errors that would not have escaped any responsible effort at verification."
Tim Callahan was able to find numerous errors in Ray's statements. See "Environmentalists Cause Malaria! (And Other Myths of the "Wise Use" Movement}" The Humanist January/February 1995, pp 10-15, and "Trees and Volcanoes Cause Smog! (More Myths from the "Wise Use" Movement}" The Humanist January/February 1996, pp 29-34.
In Upstream: Scientific study and political reaction Michael McElroy takes Ray and Rush Limbaugh to task for misleading the public. Also of interest was the reaction when he corrected misinformation published in the Wall Street Journal.
Trouble in the Ozone by Michael Swords is another recounting of how Ray and Rush Limbaugh came to such inaccurate conclusions about ozone depletion.
